Suite of maps from the General Land Office of Michigan and surrounds, 1837, 1850, 1852.
The 1837 GLO map only covers part of Michigan (12 x 16.5") . While very important copper deposits had been found in the 1830s in Michigan, the territory was basically unsurveyed, as is the case with the 1837 map here. A separate map of Wisconsin Territory (12.5 x 9") accompanies this map, showing many towns, particularly in southern and eastern Wisconsin.
The 1850 map, 23 x 24" by surveyor Charles Noble, shows the entire region in various states of survey. Noble has been obeying the surveyor general's orders and leaving out all geopolitical data- towns, mines, etc. By this time, Michigan was the most important state in the Union for copper production. The Keweenaw peninsula shows surveyed townships, but leaves out virtually everything else. The 1852 map is not much better, but they did make a sincere effort at better cartography, particularly with water lines. Same size as 1850, as was the surveyor, Noble.
