Lot of 5. 1872-1928. 1. Adventure Consolidated Copper Co. incorp. 1898 State of Michigan. #C11721, I/C, 20 shares @$25 ea. to J.R. Williston & Co. June 5, 1908 signed V.P. and Wm. R. Todd sect. Brn. border w/ black print., vignette upper left of Mich. state seal, ìSHARES $25 EACHî brn. underprint. American Bank Note Co. Cancel punch holes and stamps. Located in Ontonagon County, this was made up of the Adventure, Hilton and Knowlton mine located in the center of the Copper Range comprising 15806 acres.
2. Incorp. 1848 State of Michigan Four certificates #518, 3188, 4666 and 52365all I/C dating from 1872-1928. Three are Wm. R. Todd sect and one M. Parsons Todd pres. Blk. border/print, vignette Mich. state seal, one has Orange underprint revenue stamp. J.J. Bloomfield and American Bank Note printer. Three are handwritten cancelled, no punch holes. The Quincy Mine is an extensive set of copper mines located near Hancock, Michigan. The mine was owned by the Quincy Mining Company and operated between 1846 and 1945, although some activities continued through the 1970s. The Quincy Mine was known as "Old Reliable," as the Quincy Mine Company paid a dividend to investors every year from 1868 thru 1920.
These cert. all have William R. Todd (1837-1924) signature as secretary. He became president 1902-24. Was active during the miners strike 1913-14 being notified bythe group sent to round up the miners had found them and, as arresting them seemed useless to arrest them, they made ready for the hospital and my have overly roughed up in the process. 1866 tried unsuccessfully at oil drilling. His son M. Parsons Todd (1877-1976)started with the company early 1900ís and became president 1924-76. A descendant of Dolly Madison, wife of President James Madison. Founder of MacCulloch Museum Morristown N.J and Mayor in 1935, re-elected 1951.
