Rare. Railroad Pass for the Headquarters of the General Relief Committee, Chicago, Oct. 11th, 1871. Issued for the Michigan Southern Railway to Mrs. Austin Hister, "A Sufferer by the late Fire" to Buffalo, NY. Signed by secretary Hutchins. The Great Chicago Fire began on the evening of October 8, 1871, reportedly in a barn owned by Patrick and Catherine O'Leary, and quickly spread due to dry conditions, wooden buildings, and strong winds. Over two days, it destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles of the city, leaving more than 17,000 buildings in ruins and about 100,000 people homeless. The disaster killed an estimated 300 people and spurred a massive rebuilding effort that transformed Chicago into a modern metropolis.
