Obviously created from a larger leather item, perhaps a saddlebag? Hand-stitched and riveted, this almost certainly dates from the mid-19th century. Contained therein is an early hand-braided cord, very possibly used as a “stampede string” attached to a hat, and designed to keep the rider’s hat in place. This may also be another souvenir from the Indian Wars period. From the Dick Reyes Collection, Carson City. Possibly a Custer family artifact. City: State: Date: ID# 38048
