Great Nevada autograph piece! David Buel was most well known for his role in the Sanitary Sack of Flour! Location: Amador Mining District, Lander County, N.T. (printed upper and lower left). Dateline Austin, June 15th, 1864. No. 23, issued for 25 shares to A.K. Stearns. Signed by W.S. Head(?) as president and David Buell as secretary. Buell was an ex-Indian Agent who came to the Reese River district during its Silver Rush. He organized the town site and gave the name to Austin, naming it after his hometown in Texas. At the time, organizers of Clifton were trying to secure its place as the main mining camp of the Reese River District. Buell knew Austin's greatest selling point was its proximity to the mines, but there was no wagon road. He offered free town lots to anyone who would help build a wagon road to Austin. Since lots in Clifton were selling at a huge price, Buell's gambit worked and the town of Austin rapidly grew. In Sept. 1863, it was secured as the county seat. Buell's last name was spelled in various ways, but we have never seen it spelled this way. Still how many David Buell's could there be in Austin at this time. Fancy logo and ingot-style vignettes to put the stock number and # of shares. Small American flag vignette at the bottom. Not cancelled. 25 cent IR adhesive revenue stamp attached at left. Printed by H.S. Crocker & Co., Sacramento. Folds, some toning. Very nice condition! Not listed in Filer index. The Amador Mining District was 6 miles north of Austin around New York Canyon and later incorporated into the Reese River district.
