Very rare, hard-bound prospectus by James Percival and Josiah D. Whitney, 1853, with litho of the mine works opposite the title page. This mine was possibly worked as early as 1700 as granted by Gov. Winthrop in 1661. Whitney writes of "ancient workings" on the property, but does not opine as to the date or by whom. Worked by Cornish miners in the early years as a possible source of silver for early U.S. coinage. Silver assays reported at 29 to 72 troy ounces per ton. The authors note early ore specimens were sent to the Royal Society in London, which may still be present in the collection (FH). There is a longitudinal cross section and map of the property. 5.5 x 8.75 inches, 24pp plus fly pages, which were used as a scrap book for various medicinal remedies in cut-out newspaper article form. Robert Bayard (1788-1868) was a medical doctor from a New York family, who fled to Canada from the US during the War of 1812. "Abraham Betts" is inscribed in the back. The Betts family are among the first settlers of New England. Rare. Not found in WorldCat.
