Fantastic fob from the 1894 Midwinter Fair held in Golden Gate Park San Francisco. Three squares are labeled: "E Pluribus Unum," "In God We Trust," and "United We Stand Divided We Fall." The round anchor piece has "California Midwinter / International Exposition / (eagle) / San Francisco / 1894." The reverse is a portrait of Columbus landing in 1492. The medal is 28 mm and the fob is 5 1/2 inches long.
Michael H. De Young visited the Columbian Exposition in Chicago 1893, and brought the idea home to San Francisco, creating the 1894 Mid Winter Exposition to spur economic activity in the Depression, and highlight the mild winters in California compared to the Eastern cities. The Fair occupied Golden Gate Park for six months. Park superintendent John McLaren (he served for 53 years) opposed the exposition saying it ruined the Park’s natural scenery. At the conclusion of the Fair, McLaren had his revenge by tearing down most of the one hundred buildings and digging up their concrete foundations.
