A ceremonial academic mace is a symbol of the authority and respect for the highest ranks of leadership at a school of higher learning. Typically a mace is carried at the front of a commencement procession of faculty and administrators ahead of the line of potential graduates, and it represents the office of the chancellor or president of the institution. In larger universities made up of multiple colleges and large departments, each college or department may be represented by its own mini-mace as that group enters the commencement venue. Medallic Art Company has been a major manufacturer of ceremonial maces, and this lot is a production sample of a mini-mace used at the inauguration of Chrysostomos L. Nikias as the Eleventh President of the University of Southern California (USC) on October 15, 2010. The mace is a 14.5-inch-tall walnut pillar that is one inch in diameter at the base and flares out to 2.75 inches in diameter at the top. A bronze cap protects the bottom end. At the top is mounted a 2.75-inch bronze medallion with the USC logo on one side and the event information on the reverse. The mini-mace is held vertical by a five-inch square walnut base with a bronze insert that secures the piece in a vertical position. The base has a brown felt covering and four small rubber feet to protect whatever is rests upon. This was unsold material that remained after the liquidation of Northwest Territorial Mint.
