Two volumes of Mineral Resources of the United States, 1867 and 1868 by J Ross Brown. These are the first two volumes of a series that started with Brown, went into Ross Raymond, and then finished with Horatio Burchard before the USGS took over. These first two volumes here represent the original work. It was an attempt by the United States government to send an inspector to the mines and mills in the West so that the investors in the East might know what was real and what wasn't. The only problem was there was more work than Congress ever imagined, and even though they authorized J Ross Brown as part of the US mineral commission, he didn't get completely paid. Brown thus privately published a number of private editions of these books. Critical references for the early mining and Western historian. (Potter Collection) Date: 1867-1868 Location: HWAC# 58978
