$1,000 gold bond issued in 1873. Not cancelled. Signed by Absolom M. West as president and Rufus Polk Neely as secretary. Southern vignette that includes slaves, steamboat, and train. 18 x 16" with coupons. This railroad was chartered in 1852 to go from Canton, Mississippi to Grand Junction, Tennessee. In 1872, the Illinois Central acquired the line. Absolom West was an American planter, Confederate militia general, state politician, and labor organizer. Was Brigadier General in the Mississippi militia. Later got into politics and was the vice president on the Benjamin F. Butler ticket for the Greenback Party. Rufus Neely was Brigadier General in the Tennessee militia and was engaged in Indian removal in 1837 and the Seminole War. Was Captain of Company B of the 4th TN Volunteer Infantry. Later a newspaper editor and involved in railroads.
