Lot of over 240 Billheads from the Missoula Mercantile Company, MT, all dated c. 1886 - 1903, two pieces from 1907 and 1923. By far the largest collection of Missoula ephemera from one entity. Most pieces have very ornate letterheads w/E.L. Bonner/President, A.B. Hammond/VP, JM Keith/Secretary & Treasurer, and CH McLeod/Manager. Many, many pieces are addressed to the renown A.M. Holter Hardware Co/Helena requesting various items; e.g. "Please ship us sure by first freight 75 kegs Black Powder; do not fail us in this as the powder is urgently needed and work waiting for it" dated Nov 26th 1887. Note: MMC was founded in 1885 and dominated the wholesale and retail market in Missoula until 1920. In its heyday it was a three story department store where everyone in or near Missoula came to shop for groceries, furniture, hardware, plumbing, etc. Note: Missoula is located in far west central Montana and is the seat of Missoula County. Missoula was first settled in 1858 and founded in 1860 as Hellgate Trading Post. By 1866 the settlement moved 5 miles upstream on Rattlesnake Creek and renamed Missoula Mills, later shortened to Missoula.
