Lot of 32 stock certificates issued to Henry Clews & Co. 100 shares Common. Two types: a) Issued in 1897. 12 text lines. Green border with vignette of locomotive leaving roundhouse (10). b) Issued in 1886. Green border with vignette of cows grazing (22). While all the stocks are endorsed on the back, only nine appear to match Henry Clews' signature. The rest may have been signed by a secretary. Henry Clews (1840-1923) was an important financial figure in New York. Born in England, he emigrated in 1853 and co-founded Livermore, Clews, and Company in 1859. That firm became the 2nd largest marketer of federal bonds during the Civil War. Clews and Co. started in 1877. He organized the "Committee of 70", which deposed the Tweed Ring in NY. Clews also served as an economic advisor to President Ulysses S. Grant in Japan and wrote a book, Fifty Years in Wall Street. Condition: punch cancellations, wrinkles, staining. Date , TX hwac 21039
