Rare. Dateline Nebraska City, June 20, 1864. For material onboard the Steamer Colorado. Vignette of paddlewheel steamboat in upper left. Folds, a few tears. This was right during the Pike's Peak Colorado Gold Rush! In the 1860s, Missouri River packet lines carried passengers and freight upriver from St. Louis to frontier towns, military posts, and mining camps. Key stops included Leavenworth, Omaha, Sioux City, and Fort Randall, with the farthest practical navigation point being Fort Benton, Montana. These steamboats were the lifeline for supplying soldiers, settlers, and miners heading into the Northern Plains and Rocky Mountain gold fields.
