Mitchell's Traveller's Guide through The United States. Containing the Principal Cities Towns &c. Alphabetically Arranged; together with the Stage, Steam-boat, Canal and Railroad Routes, with Distances, in Miles, from Place to Place. Illustrated by an Accurate Map of the United States.By Mitchell & Hinman. Published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., Philadelphia. 78 pages. Black leather covers with gilt lettering. This is the first Mitchell's Guide to label Texas as such and not as part of Mexico, and the first to be published as a booklet as rather than a simple fold-out chart. Hand-colored map is 17.5" x 21.5." Engraved on steel by J.H. Young & D. Haines. Copyrighted 1834 by S. Augustus Mitchell. Shows the Eastern US from Maine to Indian Territory, with a small sliver of Texas and Florida. Insets of the Vicinity of Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston. Map has two areas of soiling on the upper right, otherwise it is in fairly good condition with expected folds and light creasing on border. Covers also have rubbing. What makes this copy even more interesting is that someone added pages to it (by sewing into the binding) in 1848. Those added pages include handwritten entries detailing costs of items and transportation on the East Coast.
