This is a Model 1842 Springfield musket marked 1848 on the barrel tang and the date 1852 on the lock-plate. This is the last model smoothbore Springfield at .69 cal. The barrels were left "in the white" and marked with the "V" or "P" and the palmetto tree underneath. The fit to finish of metal to metal and metal to wood is excellent. This is a three band musket, where the front band acts as a front ramrod ferrule, stock band, and front sight. There is a lug underneath for bayonet mounting. The overall condition of the gun is very good, wood shows original finish. The familiar US is stamped on the top heel of the buttplate, the lock is marked with the eagle, and Springfield 1852 on the lock-plate behind the hammer. The lock works perfectly, the bore is bright without pitting. The stock shows handling wear consistent with 160 years of use. Overall length at 58 in. on a 42 in. barrel. The leather sling is a late addition. Overall condition is very good. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No sales to New York, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii. This is an antique, non FFL firearm. Please see photo for details.
