This Sharps is the model 1859 saddle ring carbine complete with patchbox in .56 cal. Overall length is 39 in. with a 21-22 in. round barrel. The S/N 49036 is visible on the tang where total production of this model was just under 7000 (from 1859-1862). There is an ordinance inspectors mark in the tail of the ring slide "C". There is a cartouche above the slide where the rectangle is still visible and the inspectors initials are barely visible as "JT" for John Taylor. The barrel is marked "New Model 1859" at the top of the breach and forward of the rear sight is: "Sharps Rifle, Manufacturing Co., Hartford, Conn." on three lines, a "S.L" on the left side. These marks have been cleaned to be more readily visible. The lock has the in-line Lawrence pellet-priming system that was discontinued in 1863. The lock-plate is marked: "R.S. Lawrence Pat. April 12th, 1859" referring to the priming system behind the hammer, and "C. Sharps Pat. Oct. 5th, 1852". The left side of the action is marked:" C. Sharps Pat. Sept. 12th, 1848". The bore is very good with only minor pitting just forward of the chamber. The barrel is mounted with the patented Lawrence ladder sight out to 700 yards. The stocks are original finish with handling marks consistent of military usage. The overall metal fit is excellent with gray or plum patination. The patchbox will not open, and the lever catch works smoothly. The lock action is smooth and tight and the ring and slide are all present.
