This is a contract built rifled musket by United Arms Co. of New York model 1860, dated 1863; (1858-1865 Hartford, Conn.). This was a contract rifle to meet the demand of Union troops. A rare gun with original finish with an estimate of about 300 made! (Ref. Flyderman's guide 2007). This particular gun may have been sub-contracted to Parker, Snow, Brooks & Co. of Meriden, Connecticut for completion. (Parker, Snow would make guns of their own and later fine shotguns after the war). It is at .58 cal. rifled, the bore is clean without pitting. There are no proofing marks on the barrel, left in the white, with a three leaf rear sight for 100, 200, and 300 yards. The lock-plate is marked "1863" behind the hammer, an eagle with "US" underneath and "U.A. Co. New York" forward on the plate. The gun has a cleanout at the drum below the nipple which was consistent with other contract pieces of the period. The ramrod is original, the buttplate is original and needs to be refit. There is some finish loss at the comb of the stock. Springfield, and Harper's Ferry could not keep up with demand so several outside contractors were summoned to build these guns. A rare piece of Civil War and New York state history. In very good condition. The sling is a late addition. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No sales to New York, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii. This is an antique, non FFL firearm. Please see photo for details. (ref. American Firearms Makers, Carey 1953, p.126.)
