This is a model 1863 Springfield musket marked "1863" on the lock-plate behind the hammer. The lock also depicts the eagle both on the lock-plate and the drum on the barrel. "U.S. Springfield" forward of the hammer. The stock wears two ordinance inspection marks on the side-plate mortice with the initials "ADK" inside one cartouche. A.D. King was the ordinance inspector at Colt and at Ames Sword Company in Chicopee, Mass. only a short distance away from Springfield where this rifle was built. Clearly, Mr. King was relocated to the rifle plant a short distance from Ames to cover double duty ordinance inspections during the war. The rifle wears the familiar "V" over "P" over the palmetto tree at the breach. The bore looks clean with crisp rifling and no pitting. The barrel was left originally in the white which now has a light patination, while the lock has turned a light gray. The stock show handling wear consistent with military issue. The buttplate wear the usual "US" at the heel of the plate. Both sling swivels are present and the three barrel bands have the "U" stamping. The rear sight has three leaves for 100, 200, and 300 yards. Overall length is 56 in. 40 in. barrel rifled at .58 cal. Wood to metal fit is near perfect, this rifle was the latest technology for its time with a reduced bore to .58 cal. and fine accuracy with a mini-ball. Solid construction even after 160 years. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No sales to New York, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii.
