This is a model 1873 "trapdoor" Springfield with bayonet; built in 1882. There is the usual "VP" over the "flaming bomb" Springfield proof stamp on the barrel, "SWP 1882" Cartouche on the right side lock mortice for (ordinance inspector S.W. Porter), "U" stamped on the barrel bands, "R" stamped at the breach and rear sight, and a "P" in a circle at the bottom of the stock. The serial number is not legible on the receiver and the gun is in poor condition with the stock broken at the receiver in front of the trigger-guard. This is the full length rifle at 52 in. with two barrel bands. The bayonet is 21 in. overall length while the blade is about 18 in. There is no scabbard or frog. The steel shows moderate age and pitting with a healthy "S" stamped at the base of the blade.
