Fuel Forage and Straw voucher for the second quarter of 1873 by Lieutenant W.H. Boyle, 21st Infantry A.A. Location is simply "in the field" (somewhere in Oregon, probably near Lost River). Has 20 entries from April 1st to June 30th, 1873. Signed by Boyle in the bottom right. 14.5 x 17" Folds, some soiling/toning. Boyle was involved in an attack by the Modocs who meant to kill the peace commissioners. He left Vancouver with the 21st Infantry on Dec. 3, 1872 to take part in the conflict. According to "The Modocs and Their War," Boyle spoke Chinook and was brought along as a translator during one of the negotiations with the Indians in January 1873. The negotiation went bad and the Modocs opened fire on Boyle and the person he was with, Walter Sherwood, mortally wounding Sherwood. Boyle made it back to the Gillem's camp. This all preceded the second battle of April 1873. [See also: Eyewitnesses to the Indian Wars, 1865-1890: The wars for the Pacific Northwest, pg.147-150] Date: 1873 City: State: Oregon HWAC# 77650
