Number 34 for 10 shares to HW Vesey. Datelined Gold Hill, N. T. 1864. Signed by secretary GW Pease and president Morison. Incorporated Feb. 17, 1864. Not cancelled. Native American vignette. Gold Hill News print. Location: Mogul Ledge, Desert District, Churchill County. Holes at fold intersections and small rips at fold edges. Some discoloration. Fair condition. Located on the northeast flank of Desert Peak in the Hot Springs Mountains, about 7 miles west-southwest of White Plains (Huxley) station on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Vanderburg (1940) mentioned that the Desert Queen Mine in this district may have been discovered by emigrants in 1849; if so, this district would be the site of the earliest mining activity in the state. This is a significant signature piece. Horace M. Vesey acquired the Vesey Hotel (currently the Gold Hill Hotel) in late 1862. The popular hotel became an important part of the thriving metropolis of Gold Hill, hosting many Comstock social events such as ìVesey's Ball."Miners from Gold Hill and Virginia City first assembled in front of the Vesey House on August 6, 1864, to adopt a constitution in the first attempt to organize a union in the West. Pease was "well known" on the Comstock for four decades. He also had a piece published in the Sagebrush Anthology by Berklove. This anthology celebrated a school of writing called the "Sagebrush School." This term applied to a group of Nevada writers from the 1860's to the early twentieth century. Additional background notes on Vessey, Pease and the Mogul mine.
