Rare. County of Alturas, Territory of Idaho (printed under title). $1,000 bond No. 37 issued to George Merritt on March 15th, 1875. Signed by president William C. Smack and secretary H. Knippenberg. Not cancelled. Black border and print. Small patriotic vignette of eagle and another of a Native American. "One Thousand Dollars" printed in green. Eight coupons attached. Folds with some separation, other light wear. 17 x 13" This mine, discovered in 1863, was located at the head of Quartz Gulch 1.5 miles south of Atlanta, Alturas (now Elmore) County. For many years this was a very profitable property. In 1875 some 40.5 tons of ore yielded $160,000. Eventually the mine was sold to the Atlanta Mining Co., which ceased operations in 1886.
