According to Hollister (1867). the company, along with the Philadelphia and Colorado Gold Mining Co., installed a Monnier muffle, 80 feet long, six by nine feet in size, with a stack 50 feet high, in 1866. The company was working on the Gardner Lode (p. 183). Hollister describes the Monnier Process: "consists in roasting in the presence of sulphates of soda, iron, or other similar salts, in a long furnace or muffle. The flame passes under and heats the sole of the furnace, on which the ore, mixed with one-tenth its weight of sulphate of soda, is worked from one to the other end, the heat being gradually increased as it approaches the point of discharge. Almost all the sulphur is expelled, and the copper and silver salts left in a soluble condition" (p. 353). Hollister then notes that this company has been organized in Philadelphia "for the purpose of introducing and using the process in Colorado, and they have commenced operations" (p. 354). The Gardner Lode was located on Quartz Hill toward Nevada Gulch.
