Bond cert. #239. Issued at Bridgeport, Mono County on Mar. 20, 1878. Signed by Frank Shaw, Chairman of the county Board of Supervisors and the county auditor and treasurer. $50 denomination, $10% gold bonds were sold to fund the building of a wagon road from Antelope Valley, in Mono County, up the west Walker River to intercept the Sonora and Mono Wagon Road, onward to Big Meadows and then to Benton. A bond issue had previously funded the Sonora and Mono Wagon Road back in 1863. Red pen cancel indicates the bond was redeemed in 1886. A new wagon road was likely needed in 1878, as the frenzied stampede to Bodie was in full swing. In 1878, a Bodie businessman noted, “If there ever was a country cursed with bad roads and “toll gatherers”, we certainly believe that Inyo and Mono counties could carry off the palm” (Bodie Bonanza, Loose, 1979). Bond certificate is VF with two coupons attached at the right.City: BridgeportCounty: MonoState: CADate:
