A rough cotton bag measuring 15” wide x 26” in length and stamped with Monolith/ M/ Portland Cement / 11-27-C / Monolith, Calif. In faded black and red lettering. The original company was begun in 1908 to help build the aqueducts that would carry water from the Owens Valley to Los Angeles. Monolith was perfectly situated along the transmission route and had plentiful supplies of the quality clay and limestone needed for producing cement. In 1914 the mill shut down, as the project was finished, but the property was purchased in 1920 and a year later renamed the Monolith Portland Cement Company. It continued in operation for about 50 years until it was purchased and modernized by the Calavaris Cement Company that operates the facility today. This bag probably dates from the 1921-70’s period [Ref: www.johnfahey.com/pages/portland.html].
