A major archive of several hundred pieces c 1875-1881 of many of the major banks in montana at the time. Most of these were heavily involved with gold mining, banking the proceeds of same and working with the mining compaies. In this archive are at least 12 different banks including one run by copper magnate W.A. Clark and another by Hershfield.
These bank correspondence pieces shed significant light into how the banks did business with both otehr banks, merchants and mining companies. Part of that business is payment in gold and receipt of gold. Montana c. 1870s
