Lot of approx. 250 pieces. This is an important Montana archive covering the 1870s and 1880s. Includes ~225+ checks, CODS, deposit slips, and 8 other banking pieces (incl. bank books). 1) Bank books include: two different for Helena Building & Trust Company, First National Bank, entries beginning May 1889; and four time books for Helena Building & Investment Co., May, July, October 1889 and January 1890; an unused Handy Cash Book Compliments of CW Bank & Co. Druggists, Virginia City, Montana, 190-; and some sort of personal accounting leather book for SR Buford & Co., Virginia City, MT. 2) Massive check archive. The vast majority have imprinted revenues; most RN-B, some RN-C and some RN-G. RN Checks are Banking House of LH Hershfield & Bro. transacting with two financial institutions: Northrup & Chick of New York and the Bank of California in San Francisco. Most of the checks are the great version with a prospector and dog vignette. The checks are in very good condition; the CODs have a portion cut out of left side (possibly where a stamp used to be?). We did a quick scan through this hoard to look for important names and/or autographs, and did not see any notables. This collection is an important window into a key banking operation during the mining heydays in Montana Territory. The LH Hershfield & Bro. Banking House in Helena operated 1865-1882. It was located in Last Chance Gulch, near the corner of Bridge St. and Warren St. It then became the Merchants National Bank from 1882-1898, then Union Bank & Trust Co. 1898-1959. Hershfield also had a banking business in Virginia City, Montana. Please inspect.
