This is an original, enlarged tinted photograph by Montana photographer Kenneth F. Roahen. Measures 21.5" x 13.5" with original frame and label on the reverse: "East Rosebud Lake. Beartooth Mountains, Montana. By K. F. Roahen. The photo is protected under glass, but appears to have some waviness, possibly from exposure to moisture, although no water stains are visible. The bottom left corner is stamped with small typefont "Roahen Photo".

Kenneth F. Roahen (1888-1976) was an eminent game warden, naturalist, and photographer for the U.S. Biological Survey/U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; he was a self taught amateur photograph all his life and produced hundreds of real photo postcards, known for their sharp, clear images. Roahen's career as a Game Agent for the U. S. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife spanned from 1924-1954. His District covered 5 Midwest States and Roahen was charged with investigating market hunting associated with organized crime in Chicago, during the days of Al Capone. After sustaining many injuries during run-ins with the Mob, and surviving several violent attempts on his life, Roahen was transferred to Billings, MT in 1930. There he became actively involved with the Custer Battlefield Historical Museum; his photographs of the Custer Battlefield and surrounding area earned him National prestige as a photographer. The body of photographic work produced by Kenneth Roahen is massive and spans thousands of miles of wilderness around the areas in which he lived and worked throughout his life.
