Eight mounted photos (four up, mounted on each side of board (10.25" H x 16"W) by I. W. (Isaiah West) Taber (1830-1912). Included are views of a Chinese fishing village, fishermen (fishing for abalone). Monterey Bay, Midway Point, a whaling station, and other views from Monterey.

Taber first came to California on a whaler in the mid-1840's. He returned to Massachusetts (where he was born) in 1854. Then he returned to San Francisco in 1864 and worked for various photo studios. Around 1875 he partnered with Thomas H. Boyd and formed I. W. Taber and Company. Around 1877, he was in business alone and he produce a variety of large format scenes of the West and portraits of prominent people and stereotypes. In 1906, at the time of the S.F. Earthquake, he was 76 and lost his gallery and negative collection. That was the end of his photographic career.
