The Montrose Grain Company is a long standing company right in the middle of America's grain heartland. Montrose , while a small community of about 400, represents an important continued historical economic aspect of America that is too often overlooked. While it is easy, and romantic to talk about gold and silver mining, another major business through time are all aspects of food production, and grain is right there at the top of the list. Montrose came into existence in the 1860s as a small community based upon grain production. A railroad ran through by the early 1870s allowing national access to their treasured crops: grain. Five grains are produced in great quantity in Missouri: soybeans, corn, wheat, rice, and grain sorghum. As of 2019, Missouri, a major world producer of grains, ranked 4th in rice production, 7th in soy bean production, 7th in grain sorghum production, and 10th in corn production. The overall agricultural contribution to Missouri's economy was a stunning $88 billion in 2018, according to State references.
These signs thus represent an important facet of American economy and a different form of "gold": grain and food.
