No. 3883, issued for 40 shares to Margaret V. Underhill in Jersey City, May 15th, 1867. Signed by the president (WH Balcott) and secretary (John Rodgers). Cut cancelled. Four vignettes with allegorical and canal themes. 5.75 x 9.75" Tear on top center border. The Morris Canal & Banking Co. operated the Morris Canal, used for transportation of anthracite coal from Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley to northern New Jersey's growing iron industry and other developing industries in New Jersey and the New York City area. The canal also carried iron ore to iron furnaces in western New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania until the development of Great Lakes iron ore caused them to decline. It remained in heavy use throughout the 1860s. In 1871, it was leased to the Lehigh Valley Railroad and taken over by the state of New Jersey late in 1922.
