No. 862, issued for 12 shares to EJ Burrows in Jersey City in 1859. Signed by president E. Marsh and the secretary. Circular black cancel over vignette of allegorical figures and canal. Pinholes, rip lower left edge. 5.75 x 9.5" Seeking to improve transportation between the coal mines of Pennsylvania, the iron forges of Morris County, and the great marketplace of New York City, the state legislature chartered the "Morris Canal and Banking Company" in 1824 to build an artificial waterway between the Hudson and Delaware rivers. When completed in 1837, the canal measured 109 miles in length and over 1,000 feet in elevation, and contained 23 inclined planes and 34 locks. It was named for Colonel Lewis Morris (1671-1746) and the influential Morris family of New Jersey, who were prominent landowners and political leaders in the region, not founding father Robert Morris of Pennsylvania.
