This is a rare cover to the Territory of Jefferson. The bottom of the address says St. Jo, Mo. This is where the mail would have left the official postal services and would have been transferred to Hinkley. Manuscript Care of Hinckley Co's Express. The Territory of Jefferson was an extralegal and unrecognized United States territory that existed from October 24, 1859 until the creation of the Colorado Territory on February 28, 1861. Sent from Philadelphia with an octagonal postmark in April of 1861. This part of the United States was officially known as the Colorado Territory by this time.
