Cert. #33, issued for 10 shares to Robt. Battersby in 1863 and signed by James K. Whitaker as president and G. E. Schenck as secretary. Vignette of two miners working underground. Vignette by Loomis - one of San Francisco's finest mining stock certificate lithographers. Location: Big Creek, Lander County, N.T. printed left of the vignette and Ophir Ledge printed to the right. Green underprint says, Capital Stock- $200,000. Rare printer: William B. Cooke & Co., San Francisco. Big Creek is 14 miles southwest of Austin. The district started in 1863 and prospered until 1866, when the ore ran out (Paher). Black print on pink tinted paper. Rare. Uncancelled. Battersby was a prospector and promoter of the area in 1863. He had a canyon near Big Creek named for him, although I could find no information on it other than an article in the Reese River Reveille. Mine was actually in the Mount Hope Mining District. Research on the Mount Hope district and a biography on Battersby
