# 410 for 9 shares to JSS Robinson. Signed by DeWitt Riddell and president Sextus Shearer. Dateline 1865 Silver Mountain. San Francisco has been crossed out and Silver Mountain has been written in. incorporated June 4, 1863. Not cancelled. Unusual mountain vignette. No printer. Could actually be the site of the mine! Vertical and horizontal folds. Top right corner has been folded. Overall nice. The Silver Mountain "Mountain" was the first discovery of silver at Silver Mountain in the fall of 1860. A tunnel was commenced in 1861 and by 1865 they had a 310-foot tunnel, and a mill site "immediately in front of the mouth of the tunnel, on Silver Creek"; they also had a lower tunnel that was in 160 feet and was 6-1/2 by 7 feet "in the clear, calculated for a double track." [Monitor Gazette] It was one of the most prominent and active locations in the Silver Mountain mining district circa August, 1863; worked for many years. [Jackson, p. 24; 50]. In August of 1864 Sextus Shearer told the Stockton Daily Independent reported that Sextus Shearer, County Judge, of Alpine county, was in town, looking as hearty as a boy of 16. He informed us that the weather in the mountains is fine and that everything bespeaks a bright future for the Silver Mountain country. JSS Robinson was around for quite a bit in Silver Mountain City. He was an initial Trustee and incorporator for the Silver Mtn Hydraulic Co in October, 1863. He may have been staying in the Fisk Hotel in July, 1864, or at least was well acquainted with Charles Fisk; a case of goods was shipped from San Francisco for him, by Royal Fisk (letter 1864 July 9). In May, 1868, he bought the interest of William Pearson in the firm of Robinson & Pearson (1868 May 30 Chronicle). He was still living in Silver Mountain as of the 1870 Census; he was age 56; occupation "Miner"; born in Nova Scotia; and owned $1300 of real property and $300 of personal property; his wife's name was Augusta D., and she was born in Maine. In 1873, he sold his mill site (south of the town) with 40 acres “and the old Toll House” (Alpine Book “D” p. 510). DeWitt Ribbell is also closely connected to Silver Mountain. He was a notary public and agent for Wells Fargo. He was the sole proprietor of the Buckeye #2 in 1868. He owned at least 19 lots in Silver Mountain City at one time.
