Mounted photograph of the entrance to the famous Silver King Mine. You can see ore track leading into the mine, as well as machinery and men standing on the hill above the mine. Photo is 5 x 3" on 8 x 4" cardboard mount. Reverse has stamp for Buehman Studios, Tucson A.T. Pencil notations identify this as the Silver King Mine in 1888. Pinal County was formed in 1875 from three counties. About this time, word of a great discovery at a new mine called the Silver King was being circulated. The 6 x 9' shaft only went down 42 feet with a 12 foot drift. But, "Great quantities of nearly pure silver is found in the little black nuggets of quartz" [Raymond]. The company would go on to become one of the great mines in Western history. By 1883, it had paid $1,300,000 in dividends with an undisclosed amount after that!
