Components from a music box, including 1) the wooden partial back and top, 2) a brass interior frame, 3) a brass arm that was attached to the frame, 4) the brass-wrapped cylinder/drum, and 5) a brass gear or cog.

The most interesting part of this artifact may be the cylindrical drum, wrapped with a brass sheet that has pinholes in it, indicating where tiny pegs once sat to pluck the tuned teeth of a steel comb that produced the sound, producing the tune as the cylinder rotated. The pattern of the music can be seen, reflected by the pin pattern. Perhaps the tune can be figured out by comparison with similar age automated musical instruments.

It is fascinating to think about the sounds on the Central America, and music playing as they steamed into history.
