c.1920s. This token is for the Nevada Lime & Rock Company, which operated at Sloan. The Nevada Lime & Rock Company is listed in 1918 as a zinc mining operation. In subsequent years (1921, 1922, 1931) it is described as a limestone quarry. The company was apparently still operating at Sloan in 1956 when it was mentioned as a lime plant and rock quarry in a geological report. Sloan, Nevada, evolved from an ancient indigenous crossroads into a vital 20th-century industrial hub. For thousands of years, Ancestral Puebloan, Patayan, and Southern Paiute peoples utilized the local canyons as a desert highway, carving over 1,700 petroglyphs into the volcanic rock panels. Modern settlement began around 1912 when mineral prospectors discovered rich limestone and dolomite deposits, establishing a small community originally named Ehret before it was officially renamed Sloan in 1922. The town quickly grew into a major economic force fueled by the Sloan Limestone Quarry and a bustling roadside transit stop for early desert motorists, until urban growth prompted Congress to protect the region's vast archaeological treasures by establishing the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area in 2002. Pop in 1990: 4.
