Vanderbilt was made vice-president of this railroad in 1869 and then president in 1877. He was the eldest son of Cornelius Vanderbilt who left him a $100 million dollar fortune when he died in 1877. William became the richest man in America. He continued his father's line of work running a railroad empire and also being a noted philanthropist.
