Fascinating lot of 21 brass medals, each 15 mm. Obverse reads "By The Mercy of God" with winged angel; reverse a place and a date in the early 1800s. For example: May 11 / Almeda /1811. In the siege of Almeida, Portugal, the French corps of Marshal Michel Ney captured the border fortress from Brigadier General William Cox's Portuguese garrison. This action was fought in the summer of 1810 during the Peninsular War portion of the Napoleonic Wars. Another example: July 27 / Talavera / 1809: The Battle of Talavera (27–28 July 1809) was fought just outside the town of Talavera de la Reina, Spain 75 mi southwest of Madrid, during the Peninsular War. At Talavera, an Anglo-Spanish army under Sir Arthur Wellesley combined with a Spanish army under General Cuesta in operations against French-occupied Madrid. Each 15 mm, brass.
