The 150th anniversary of the National Academy of Design Medals was celebrated by Medallic Art Co. of Danbury Ct. One medal is bronze, one is 24 karat gold over .999 fine silver. The gold piece is 65.7 grams. The obverse bears Greek hero Bellerophon on winged steed Pegasus trying to reach the stars. Clouds at left and right bottom, sun rays from below. Signed above right cloud De Lue/ SC 75. The revers shows nude Prometheus kindling flame he stole from the sun; burning sun behind. Abover, 1825 National Academy of Design 1975 / One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary. The bronze medal measures 44.5mm in diameter. The gold over silver piece was probably a presentation piece usually given to the artist or a key benefactor of the medal's production.
