National Bank of Merit for 4 shares of Stock to the holder, Orange print, very fine detail by H.J. Toudy & Co., Philadelphia. Signed by teacher, J.W. Malone and pupil, Susan McGrath. Very fine vignettes, a railroad vignette in bottom left, above a vignette of a girl sitting next to roses with a Third reader, Chicago in her hand, a third vignette on the right of 2 children reading a book, "Where knowledge is a Duty, Ignorance is a Crime." By the example of an 19th century school reward for children, Benjamin Stradley, a New York engraver, issued similar rewards from around 1870 until sometime after 1878. The reward here is patterned after bank notes of the day and used their printing techniques. Stradley printed a number of other "stock certificates" from the fictional "National Bank of Merit," in various denominations. This particular form of reward came at a time when the New York stock market was growing in size and influence. Periodic panics and crashes in the 1880s, though, would later reduce its credibility.
