Antique 1800's Old West Native American Beaded Leather Gauntlets Gloves. Probably Plains Indian made in the 1870's. Possibly Meti, general reference to peoples of French/Indian extraction on the central and northern plains. French traders often lived for many years with an Indian tribe and married Indian women. Many of the women who married French traders beaded in a floral style quite distinct from the geometric styles characteristic of most plains tribes. This old pair of beaded Native American gauntlets are about 13 1/2" long from top to end of middle finger and 9" across top of cuff. The beadwork is quite beautiful and all beading intact, no loose beads. Native American artists began adding beadwork to Euroamerican leather gloves. These beautifully-beaded gauntlets were worn in both Indian and non-Indian communities. By the late 19th century, beaded gauntlets gloves were necessary components of the western cowboys' fancy dress wardrobe and quickly became favorites of eastern "dudes" who kept them as souvenirs of their western adventures.
