This is contemporary ledger art by Native artist Eddie J. Encinas of the Omaha Tribe. It was done on an 1895 check from Francke & Schindler, Indianapolis. The ledger art depicts two Native American warriors on horseback, done in color and signed by the artist in 2016. Ledger art was popular from the 1860s to the 1920s and describes Plains Indian narrative drawings or paintings down on paper or cloth. The name comes from the fact the accounting ledger books were a common source of paper for the Plains Indians.
