Very fine beaded pipe bag, probably Cheyenne, possibly Sioux. 6 x 15" plus 6" fringe. Large extended vertical diamond patterns in red, white and blue bead work, polychrome. Although the origin is somewhat obscure, the pipe and bag are good examples of Plains Indian pipe bag construction and beading styles. Native Americans made an incredible variety of pouches for every conceivable purpose. Beaded pipe bags were some of the finest items made. Their tobacco was sometimes carried at the bottom of the bag. The pipe bowl was separated when it was carried and a thong drawstring tie was attached to the top of all pipe bags to secure the contents of the bag. City: State: Date: HWAC# 33760
