Piece of Native American pottery, probably from a tribe in the American Southwest. There are several swastikas painted around the top of this jug. Before it became a symbol of hatred and evil associated with Nazis, the swastika was used by indigenous peoples around the world. In the American Southwest, the Navajo used the swastika as a symbol to represent the four directions. In 1940, many Native American tribes declared that they would no longer use the swastika in their artwork. This jug is about 14 inches tall, and about 41 inches in diameter at its widest point.
