Truly spectacular split drill core from the immense Ray Copper Mine in Pinal County, Arizona. The label says the core came from 1,100 feet below the present pit level beneath the underground mine. This would have been some time ago, since the present open-pit operations have exposed much if not all of the old underground workings of the Ray Mine. Currently owned by Asarco, now a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico, the Ray Mine has one of the largest copper reserves in the country. This half-core is about 4.75 inches long and 2.5 inches in diameter and weighs about 1.6 pounds. It is quite solid and not friable. This core specimen is not only visually spectacular but also a piece of Arizona mining history.
