Heavy slab of copper-bearing "Sandstone Ore" from the White Pine Mine in Ontonagan County, Michigan on the west end of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It is 7.5 x 5.25 x 0.625 inches and weighs about two pounds. Included in the lot is a refined copper piece engraved with COPPER RANGE / WHITE PINE. The White Pine Mine began in the 1860s with small operations of short duration. Calumet and Hecla Mining Co. drilled the area in the early 1900s, and in 1929 the Copper Range Company acquired the property. Mining commenced on a large scale in 1953, which continued until 1997, having produced more than 4.5 Billion pounds of copper. The Highland Copper Company of Canada is currently negotiating the purchase of the White Pine Mine property.
