Four native gold-in-quartz specimens from one of the gold pokes found in the port-side debris field, Coin Pile #23, of the S.S. Central America shipwreck. It is probable that these four specimens were owned by a jeweler heading east. One of the specimens has two cut surfaces exposing a nice wide native gold vein. Slices of this rock would have been used for California gold quartz jewelry. The other three specimens are raw, exhibiting native gold in vein form or a spot here and there. While we know prominent San Francisco jeweler Samuel Shreeve was on board carrying inventory, we don't know if these rocks were owned by him or another man involved with the jewelry business. These four specimens are exceptionally important in that there may be less than two handfuls of original high-grade gold quartz specimens from the gut of the California Gold Rush period extant, the best of which is the Fricot Nugget held in the California State Museum at Mariposa. The largest piece here, as well as the piece with the two cut surfaces is 1.25 x 1 x 0.75 inches.
