Humans have been wearing clothing made out of animal pelts and fur for 170,000 years. Hunters wore the skins and pelts from their most challenging kills as a way to showcase their prowess. As early as the 11th century, fur was worn as a symbol of wealth and social status. European royalty regularly wore fur coats, fur capes, and fur accessories made from mink, sable, and chinchilla fur. By the 1300s, laws were introduced that regulated which social classes were allowed to wear which types of furs. Historically, silver foxes were among the most valued fur-bearers, and their pelts were frequently worn by nobles in Russia, Western Europe, and China. The popularity of fur in the Victorian Era was so widespread that farms became necessary to meet demands. Since then fur clothing and fur accessories have remained a symbol of wealth, luxury, and high fashion, seemingly immune to changing trends. Fox fur has been a preferred choice for generations, as it is dense, long-haired, soft, and silky. Fox pelts are available in a wide range of natural colors including red, gold, brown and the highly desirable silver color. The expression "silver fox" in reference to attractive men with gray hair attests to the iconic appeal of silver fox fur.
